In Odisha, the victory of BJP in the state Assembly elections where the party won 78 of the 147 seats. Following his party’s defeat, BJD Chief and Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik submitted his resignation to Governor Raghubar Das at the Raj Bhawan in Bhubaneswar. Mr Patnaik is the longest serving chief minister of Odisha who served for five consecutive terms spreading over 24 years and three months. He first took the oath of chief minister of Odisha on 5th of March in 2000.

BJP stormed to power in Odisha by securing 78 of the 147 assembly seats, while the BJD managed to win only 51 seats. Congress bagged 14 constituencies and CPI (M) secured one, while three Independent candidates also emerged victorious. The results were announced on Tuesday.

Bhubaneswar: Odisha Chief Minister and Biju Janata Dal (BJD) chief Naveen Patnaik has resigned following his defeat in the assembly elections. Governor Raghubar Das tendered his resignation at the Raj Bhavan in Bhubaneswar on Wednesday (June 05) morning. The election results were released on Wednesday.

BJD has been in power in Odisha since 1997. Patnaik was appointed Chief Minister on 5 March 2000. A long 24-year rule has now come to an end.

In the 147-seat state assembly, the BJP won 78 seats while the BJD won only 51 seats. Also, BJD could not win a single seat in the Lok Sabha elections. BJP won 20 seats out of 21 constituencies. Congress also won one seat. Many prominent figures, including the Chief Minister and nine ministers in his cabinet, faced defeat in the Assembly and Lok Sabha elections.

Patnaik was defeated by BJP candidate Laman Bagh in Kantabanji by a majority of 16,344 votes. Prime Minister Narendra Modi thanked the people for the BJP’s progress in Odisha the other day.
